Leaders and Followers: Which One Are You?
Let’s get something straight right now:
There are two types of people in this world.
Leaders.
And followers.
One group builds things.
The other group waits for approval from Karen in middle management.
One group takes risks.
The other asks if they can leave 14 minutes early for a dentist appointment.
One group creates wealth.
The other attends mandatory Zoom trainings called “Synergy Optimization.”
Now look — not everyone is meant to lead.
Society actually needs followers.
Who else would sit in gray cubicles under fluorescent lighting updating spreadsheets nobody reads while pretending “Q3 alignment strategy” is a personality trait?
Exactly.
And nowhere is this more obvious than at banks.
Ah Yes — The Bank Employee
The professional follower.
The human equivalent of a “please hold while we transfer your call.”
Every morning:
- wake up at 6:30am
- sit in traffic
- badge into a beige building
- drink burnt coffee
- approve loans for people who are freer than they are
Then they come home exhausted from “moving money around” all day while wondering why their own account balance looks like a hostage situation.
Followers Love Safety
Followers LOVE security.
They love:
- permission
- policies
- approvals
- dress codes
- annual reviews
- “circling back”
- asking another grown adult if they’re allowed to take vacation
Leaders? Leaders build lives where Tuesday afternoon can involve pizza, sunlight, family, Duffy boat rides in Newport Beach, and not hearing the phrase “per my last email.” In other words, freedom.
That’s the difference.
Followers optimize survival.
Leaders optimize freedom.
The Great Lie
Society tells people: “Play it safe.”
Safe job.
Safe clothes.
Safe opinions.
Safe life.
Then 40 years later:
- they’re burned out
- slightly bitter
- weirdly obsessed with retirement accounts
- and asking strangers on LinkedIn to “hop on a quick call”
Meanwhile the leader everyone mocked for “taking risks” is eating deep dish pizza at 2pm on a Wednesday wondering whether to take the G-Wagon or the e-bike.
Funny how that works.
But Here’s the Twist
Most people THINK they’re leaders.
They’re not.
Buying an espresso machine does not make you an entrepreneur.
Posting “rise and grind” does not make you dangerous.
And owning a Patagonia vest while working at a regional bank definitely does not make you a wolf.
Followers LOVE pretending they’re leaders.
That’s why they copy:
- trends
- opinions
- personalities
- clothes
- careers
- lifestyles
- whatever the algorithm told them was cool this week
A true leader becomes impossible to copy because they stop asking permission to be themselves.
So… Which One Are You?
Be honest.
Are you building your own life?
Or are you standing in line hoping someone eventually promotes you to Senior Executive Assistant Vice President of Spreadsheet Coordination?
Because one road leads to freedom.
The other leads to:
- corporate birthdays
- mandatory fun
- HR webinars
- and a retirement party where Greg from accounting says, “We’ll miss ya, buddy.”
Listen carefully:
You do NOT need permission to think independently.
You do NOT need approval to build something meaningful.
And you definitely do NOT need another motivational podcast hosted by a guy named Trevor.
You just need courage.
And maybe a really good deep dish pizza.
Final Thought
At Rupiani’s®, we believe life should be bold.
Not safe.
Not corporate.
Not beige.
Bold.
So the next time someone tells you to “be realistic,” remember this:
The people changing the world were almost never the people asking for permission.
Rupiani’s®
For leaders. Not followers.
