He took the promotion. I took the risk.
There’s always that guy.
The one who works a trivial corporate job but who acts superior.
The one who smirks when you tell him you’re starting something.
The one who says things like “That’s a tough business” while adjusting his company lanyard in the parking garage of a beige office building.
Yeah, that type.
At 8:12 AM, he’s reheating Starbucks breakfast sandwiches under fluorescent lighting in his cubicle.
By 9:00, he’s inside a meeting called “Q3 Strategic Alignment Review.”
By 11:30, he’s updating a PowerPoint no human being will ever voluntarily open again.
Meanwhile, you’re trying to figure out how to ship two-pound Chicago deep dish pizzas across America.
One path came with approval.
The other came with risk.
Want to guess who won?
Here’s the part nobody tells you:
Safe will never take you to the promised land.
Safe gives you just enough comfort to stop asking bigger questions.
Safe gets the leased Volkswagen.
Safe buys the Friday happy hour at Caramba's.
Safe buys the annual 3% raise and the illusion that someday all of this is going somewhere.
Then one day you wake up 47 years old asking permission to take a two-week vacation.
No thanks.
Here's the thing: Some of us were never built for ladders.
Some of us were built to build the building. Even if it meant looking ridiculous first. Especially if it meant looking ridiculous first.
So yes:
He took the promotion.
I took the risk.
And I’d do it again tomorrow.
